Top 5 benefits of Elderberry
As the trees are slowly painted with shades of russet, gold and mustard, Autumn is now firmly upon us.
As we start to approach the colder, crisper months, this fresh new season is the perfect time to start working on immune health.
And, from apples to rosehips, pumpkins to elderberries, Autumn produce is abundant with immune-boosting benefits.
Elderberries in particular are tiny powerhouses and have been used for centuries for their medicinal benefits.
The deep purple berries, which sweep across woodlands and even into roads in early autumn, are ideal for foraging now so that you can enjoy the benefits well into winter (just don’t eat them raw - elderberries should be heated before eating).

- Rich in Antioxidants
When foraging for elderberries, they’ll likely stain your fingers with their purple juices. This is because they’re rich in antioxidants (anthocyanins), which help to protect our bodies from oxidative damage and prevent many diseases. Anthocyanins are also known to support brain health.
- Boots Immune System
The berries are also high in vitamin C, which is important for immune health. In fact, some studies have shown that consuming elderberries may help to reduce the length of colds and flu - perhaps why elderberry syrup has long been used as a folk medicine. They may even help to increase inflammatory cytokines - proteins which play a crucial role in supporting the immune system - while elderberries are also used to reduce allergy-like symptoms.
- Acts as a Diuretic
Much of the elder plant has traditionally been used as a diuretic, which helps the body to flush out waste fluid via urine. Diuretics are helpful in conditions caused by fluid build-up, as well as urinary infections and UTIs.
- May Ease Constipation
Ancient remedies saw elderberries used to relieve constipation, or to improve bowel regularity. This is partly due to their high fibre content. However, despite one small study showing promise when using elderberry as a laxative, more research may be needed into this area.
- Boosts Skin
Thanks to its rich vitamin C and antioxidant properties (as well as being high in vitamin A), elderberries are also powerhouses for the skin. These have an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effect, helping to improve texture and glow, and reducing any areas of redness or irritation.
